After markets in LA and Toronto, Independent Label Market announced it’s return to London for the fifth time (the fourth at Old Spitalfields Market), once again supported by AIM – the Association of Independent Music.
On Saturday 13th July, the heads of over 70 of the UK’s greatest independent labels came together to sell this summer’s most sought after releases and exclusive records directly to the public. East London Printmakers and the UK Poster Association sold screenprints and posters, and The Quietus hosted a specially curated stall for their favourite new labels.
The real showstopper at this event was ‘Vinyl For Syria’, where Independent Label Market partnered up with The Vinyl Factory to produce 10 super exclusive vinyl releases, only available for purchase at the market. All proceeds went to Oxfam’s Syria Crisis Appeal. A host of very exciting names from the forefront of the UK’s independent music scene each donated a track to this one-off collection. From the shimmering melodies and disjointed loops of J£zus Million and Charli XCX, to the sounds of an excursion to Ethiopia with Fresh Touch featuring Damon Albarn, Flea, Alex Kapranos and Nick Zinner, along with ultra rare and exclusive remixes from the likes of Liquid Liquid, Four Tet and Factory Floor.
This limited series was amongst the most sought after items at this summer’s event, attracting queues from 5am. Also featuring in this unique catalogue was a rare vinyl outing for Swamp 81 founder Loefah, who drew a huge crowd as he auctioned off his record.
